Winter Solstice

I literally LOVE the sun — its light and warmth make my body feel more relaxed, energized, hopeful, happy.

Given my love of summer, paradoxically, the winter solstice is my favorite day of the year! (The summer solstice ranks second ☺️)

While solstice energy spans a few days, December 21st is the traditional day to celebrate the longest night of the year (in the Northern Hemisphere).

Why I Started to Love the Winter Solstice

To be honest, I’m not super into astrology. Weird for a psychic, right? So, I first learned to appreciate the winter solstice for purely practical reasons.

I grew up terribly afraid of the dark and I dislike being cold. I dreaded winter because it combined dark and cold for days on end.

I am fully aware that I sound like such a wimp since I grew up in Northern California, but what can I say? It’s all I knew and this little girl was afraid of the dark and didn’t like being cold -- even if winter was just a couple of months long unlike many places in the world with protracted periods of frozen everything.

Once I realized the shortest day of the year wasn't just the technical start of winter, but also a turning point towards the light, sun, and longer days of spring and summer, my love affair began. I saw the winter solstice as signifying the end of the march toward the dead of winter and onward to a better brighter future.

Why I Love the Winter Solstice Now

Over the years, my fondness for the winter solstice has only grown — still for practical reasons, but also spiritual ones.

First, I lived in Sweden and Norway for a few years and that changed my mindset from fearing the dark to appreciating it. I learned how darkness brought opportunities for magical experiences created by candlelight inside and torch lights outside.

December 21st is now even more special to me. After trying for years to conceive my first child, my doctor called on December 21, 1999, to inform me that I was expecting. I fell to the ground and bawled for two straight hours.

How to Use Solstice Energy in Your Life

Rather than wait for some random day on the calendar (ahem, Jan 1st 🤭), you can use the celestial energy of the solstice to go within and reflect:

  • Where have you been?

  • Where are you now?

  • Where would you like to go?

Remember: Have Fun!

Some ideas to honor the moment or create a ceremony:

  • Pour a cup of special tea or cacao

  • Ground into the moment either with your energetic grounding or deep breathing

  • Light a candle or incense

  • Turn off distractions

  • Write

Just write- No need to have complete sentences or proper penmanship or even good grammar. No need for a beautiful journal. Just write. We want the energy to flow through you so PRESENCE is truly the only thing you need.

I know it’s hard to carve out time for inner reflection in the midst of holidays, but even if you take a walk outside and look at the trees or the moon at night or even just breathe intentionally for a breath or two, you can acknowledge the Winter Solstice in your heart.
