Dreams and Metaphors in Real Life
I started listening to the Speaking Your Brand Podcast several years ago in the hopes I’d become better at communicating about environmental issues. This was back in the days when I was trying to start my OneGreenSmoothie movement--trying being the operative word.
I’d hoped to raise awareness about what we, as individuals, can do to help our personal and planetary health. Luckily, Greta Thunberg came along and was much more effective than this middle-aged mom.
Longtime readers will remember this Journal entry from almost two years ago where I describe how Speaking Your Brand Podcast host, Carol Cox, ignited a fire within me to consciously seek out women and minority voices.
As a result, I’ve been on a mission to not only diversify my content consumption, but to actively support and promote other women in business – even when they are in a similar field as me. Carol inspired my abundance mindset; I now understand this truth: there is more than enough work for all of us, and we all win when we lift each other up!
A community-centered approach is much more empowering than the programming we are constantly fed that claims resources are scarce, we need to compete and hoard, and only one person can be at the top.
Not only is that messaging untrue, but we also simply cannot solve any of society’s or our planet's ills unless we work together and support each other.
Needless to say, I’m a huge fan of Carol and her mission! So you can imagine how thrilled I was to be a guest on her esteemed show. Carol is doing a series on storytelling, and our conversation is about how using symbols and metaphors helps us tell better, more memorable and compelling stories.
Stories are important because they can inspire action and action is exactly what our world needs. Enough with the empty promises and platitudes, we need each of us doing what we can to make our little corner of the planet a better place for all.
I hope you will be as inspired by Carol and her advocacy as I have been and continue to be. Let’s follow her lead and help raise women and marginalized voices by listening to and passing along this episode to your own communities.
Because, we truly are all in this together!

This experience was literally one of the most stressful of my life! And that is saying a LOT given I’d already overcome years of infertility trying to get these amazing kids, survived cancer while completing grad school, and moved internationally three times in two years.
